The Telephone Room.

The Telephone Room is the common name given to a particular office space located about 30 minutes south of the M.E.G.'s Base Omega within Level 4. Access and exit to this room is as easy as going through the wooden door labeled "The Telephone Room." It is a long area divided into 8 similarly sized cubicles containing desks, computers, and other regular office supplies. Trying to take any of these items out of the room is useless, as they will eventually return to it by themselves via unknown means.

Apart from this particular oddity, what separates this section from the rest of Level 4 is the presence of an abnormal number of telephones scattered all over the cubicles. The devices can be found pretty much everywhere in the room: on the desks, lying on the floor, and even inside cabinets. All telephones are able to function, even though most are not connected to any form of power supply. However, taking one of the devices and removing it from the room will cause them to lose this property until they return to it.

The telephones

The telephones found in this room present a number of anomalous properties that are described below:

  • The telephones in this room are able to form a connection with any other communication device inside the Backrooms (cellphones, radios, telegraphs, etc.) Picking up any of them has a slim chance to establish communication across any distance, albeit to a random receiver.
  • There is a sort of “game” that can occur at any time within The Telephone Room. This phenomenon begins when one of the numerous telephones in the room starts ringing. Once this happens, every time someone gets too close to said phone, the device will stop ringing and another one on the other side of the room will start to ring instead. No one has been able to pick up the ringing telephone yet, but efforts are still ongoing.
  • If only one person is in the room, there is the possibility of an even stranger event occurring. This phenomenon occurs on very few occasions, and is characterized by causing all the phones in the room to start ringing at the same time. There are only two ways out of an incident of this kind: either by answering the call from one of the devices or by ignoring them long enough until the telephones stop ringing. In case the person does pick up, a neutral, robotic voice will deliver a short, cryptic message.

A compilation of some of the messages delivered through this event are shown below:

MESSAGE: "Your legacy will be passed on for generations to come."

The receiver, a notorious Backrooms explorer, reportedly lost his way during a mapping expedition in an area infested by Chupavidas. No member of his party has returned to Base Alpha.

MESSAGE: "Everything will now come your way."

The subject attributed "mystical" qualities to this message and decided to engage in increasingly dangerous ventures, believing it impossible for anything to go against her. She has reportedly been saved "a few times" by Object 75 since, but this is yet to be verified.

MESSAGE: Subject prefered not to share.

Notes: The receiver, a M.E.G. volunteer, disappeared a couple of days after hearing the message from the telephone.

MESSAGE: "You will live a long and happy life."

Notes: The subject tripped and fell to their death from the Amorphous Tower on Level 11 the day after receiving the message.
