Level 185 is the 186th Level of the Backrooms, initially discovered on June 23rd, 2016.

Description

Level 185 is divided into three sections, each with different survival difficulty classes. The sections are the surface, the sublevel, and the abyss.

The Surface

The surface.

The surface is the first section of Level 185 that wanderers will encounter, and the safest of the three. The surface consists of an incredibly large amount of city alleyways, stretching to about 274 million square miles of alleys in total. Despite the very finite amount of entities in this section, one may encounter common threats such as Smilers (at night, see below) and Hounds.

The surface is most notable for having a bizarre night cycle. There have been 7 reports of wanderers seeing the sun appear for a brief moment in the middle of the night. The night is mostly safe, though more dangerous than the day for the main reason being that the previously mentioned Smilers come out, adding on to the already present threat of the Hounds, which are threatening to wanderers all day every day.

It is heavily advised to stay on the surface for several reasons. For one, it is the most safe section, not only because of the minimal entity count, but because of the high likeliness that you will find helpful supplies like Almond Water as well. Eventually, you will likely find a subway station, obscured by anywhere between 9-13 cardboard boxes. Going down the stairs after clearing the boxes will take you to the sublevel.

The Sublevel

The sublevel.

The sublevel is the second section of Level 185 wanderers will encounter, and the second most dangerous. For an unknown reason, the entities on the surface will almost always avoid the sublevel, and many have been seen completely stopping in their tracks when a wanderer runs through here. More research is currently being done on this strange behavior.

Despite being a subway station, only one train has ever been reported in the area. The wanderer who reported the train immediately passed away from an unknown cause after mentioning it to a M.E.G. member. The incident happened on December 2nd, 2017 and there is still no answer as to why this happened.

The most common entities reported in the sublevel are Skin-Stealers, although their behavior is noticeably different from what is considered normal. Skin-Stealers in the sublevel are rarely seen doing what their name suggests, as many are seen standing still, as if waiting for a train. Because of this, Skin-Stealers are rarely considered a threat in this section. The main threat is considered to be the child Facelings. No adult Facelings have ever been observed in the sublevel, and it is assumed there aren't any. Almond Water and Firesalt can occasionally be located by the train tracks. Entering a dark tunnel in the wall will take you to the abyss.

The Abyss

The abyss is the third section of Level 185 wanderers will encounter, and the most dangerous. The abyss is dark, only being illuminated by flood lights that occasionally disappear without a trace. The only way out of Level 185 is through the abyss, so it is highly recommended to build up confidence before entering. Similarly to the effect that the sublevel has on entities from the surface, entities from the sublevel typically avoid the abyss.

As a wanderer progresses through the abyss, they will start to notice their eyes begin straining and their vision begins to turn gray. It is theorized that staying too long within the abyss can blind you, but this theory remains unconfirmed. Any camera devices being carried by a wanderer going through the effect will lose color in any pictures taken. If the wanderer carrying the camera drops it, the effect on the pictures will undo until the camera is picked up again. This is referred to as the "abysmal grayscale effect".

The only entities in the abyss are the Smilers. Despite this, there is an incredibly large amount of them. It is estimated that the average wanderer will encounter at least three within five minutes in the abyss. The exit to Level 185 is considered the only safe part of the abyss. The exit is a large opening in the abyss' walls, leading to a beach. Contact with the water will result in the wanderer being transported out of the level.

Entrances

Entering an alleyway in Level 11 is the only known way to enter Level 185.

Exits

Making contact with the water at the beach at the end of the abyss can take you to any level, but it will most commonly take you to The End.
