Level 636 is the 637th level of the Backrooms. It is an island in the middle of an ocean that has been converted into a base of operations by the M.E.G. Investigations of the level are ongoing and observations are noted below.

Description

Level 636 is an island mass with an approximate surface area of 3408.2 km. The day-night cycle of the level is consistent with standard Earth cycles, though the island is different from typical island climates by temperature (ranging from 20-23° C) and its lack of humidity. Carbon dating of the island's trees, rocks, and glacial ice caps of the highlands estimate the island to be several thousands of years old, though no signs of erosion are present. The island contains a wide variety of biomes such as grasslands, forests, swamps, highlands, and deserts.

Grasslands are the most prominent biome, which have led to the discovery of 4 distinct landmarks on the island.

The Old Countryside:

The Old Countryside, also known as the Country or Countryside, is a common feature within the grassland areas of the island. The landmarks are a mix between broken towns or abandoned clusters of houses. Despite environmental exposure, signs of splattered water fluid across the houses and grounds do not evaporate (though this does not apply to any current instances of liquid misplacement). The architecture of the houses is reminiscent of the Greco-Roman era. Some houses have agricultural fields and small-scale aqueduct systems that are still functional. The homes themselves contain furniture of the expected Greco-Roman era. The kitchens contain various jars of bacteria cultures and carcasses of dead animals, some partially dissolved. Broken hollow clay figures1 is a common phenomenon in such houses, but was removed during M.E.G. Summer Camp expeditions.

The High City:

The High City, named Arvestyork, is a landmark ruin located within the highlands on the north side of the island in front of the mountain range. The mountains are estimated to be around 9,000 m above sea level, with the highest peak reaching 13,716 m2. Architectural referencing indicates the various buildings and urban structures resemble the Romanesque style. Many of the buildings are destroyed, ranging from unnaturally clean cuts in the architecture or kinetic impact on foundations. Despite the complete architectural differences, it is theorized that the Countryside and the City are relative to one another in terms of age and only separated by region. The rooms within The City were initially filled with many broken clay figures, dead twisted branches shaped like humanoids with leporid heads3, and piles of ashes. The contents are moved to Summer Camp after repeated expeditions.4

The Temple:

The Temple, also colloquially known as the "Sacred Space", is a massive sanctum of religious significance, constructed to take up around half of the desert biome on the west side of the island. The entire structure is currently estimated to measure around 300 km between the entrance of the temple to the farthest adjacent structure.

Despite being in a desert area that occasionally has intense 80 kph winds, the structure itself experiences no form of erosion. All structures within the temple are composed of sandstone, though there is a significant amount of collapsed statues and other objects, most broken beyond recognition. Various robed bodies were discovered, most damaged or destroyed. Water contents and dried blood5 are present across the temple. Carvings of an unknown language are seen on the walls within greater buildings of the temple and are undergoing translation. However, significant portions of the carvings are missing due to artificial fractures.

The most significant structure within The Temple lies in the epicenter. The center room holds a throne that is seated by a broken humanoid clay figure, estimated to be 2 meters in height and covered in the same dried blood found throughout the temple. The leonine head of the clay figure was found nearby with significant fractures, but otherwise intact. The room itself appears to be partially sunken into the earth and is tilted at 15 degrees toward the left. More writings are discovered, and thus currently being translated, though significant portions of the text (and other rooms as well) have been damaged or destroyed.

Currently, there are no future plans to remove the figure from the throne room, believing that doing so is "desecration" in accordance with most of the resident's opinions.

Clear Cut Chasm:

Separating the Temple from much of the island is a 50 km wide chasm, approximately 2509.2 km long traveling north to south. Bridges have been established to cross the chasm, as well as elevator shafts for exploration of the chasm itself. Locally named the Clear Cut Chasm6, the chasm is currently being explored and findings are reported on a monthly basis. The exact depth is around 1377 meters below sea level. Many clay figures and Romanesque weapons were discovered at the bottom of the chasm, shattered into many pieces. The pieces were excavated back to Summer Camp.

Bases, Outposts and Communities

M.E.G. (Major Explorer Group) Summer Camp:

  • Approximate population of 40 residents year-round though may rise upwards to 75 on average.
  • After initial expedition for area surveying and deeming there are no threats to human life, Summer Camp was officially established. The outpost consists of members experienced in biology, neurology, historiography, archeology, linguistics, and volunteers.

Entrances And Exits

Entrances:

  • The Ocean in level 628 is the first discovered entrance to this level and has been the most consistent. One can take a boat and head west until the boat no-clips through the ocean, landing into the sea of this level.
  • Level 7 Is the earliest level with a discovered entrance to this one. One can traverse westward until no-clipping at a landmark sea buoy.
  • The exposed cave entrances found within the Chasm act as entrances to various levels such as Level 7, level 8, level 173 (Found behind a waterfall), and level 197. Expeditions are ongoing to find more entrances to the Chasm.

Exits:

  • The same cave entrances to other levels found in the Chasm also act as both entrances and exits. However, this phenomenon is inconsistent.
  • Standalone trees within the Countryside were discovered to be entrances to level 39, but require those wanting to travel to be absent from all observers' field of vision. Highlighted markers have been added to the trees to prevent accidental no-clipping. Certain chopped trees were also observed to contain the same properties of traversal but are not advised to use due to wanderers ending up being cut in half whilst using the trees.
  • A single chamber7 far north that's disconnected to the Temple megastructure was noted to be connected to the Frontrooms but is too small for any person to reasonably use for a proper exit.
