Basic Memory Storage

Physically, Object 39 is a handheld cassette tape and player hybrid device with a seemingly endless storage capacity.

When activated, an Idiosyncratic Cassette will prompt the device to extract memories heavily associated with any words spoken into it. For instance, should an individual activate a cassette and audibly recall a childhood trip—or employ general descriptors closely linked to the experience—the device will use those words as a guide, tethering them to the associated memory. Subsequently, it will extract this memory from the individual, erasing it from their brain and storing it within itself.

To retrieve a memory taken by an Idiosyncratic Cassette, simply playback the recording, and the words will once again serve as an anchor in the individual's mind, facilitating the return of the memories.

It is vital to note that playing a recorded memory within the hearing range of multiple individuals will cause irreparable damage to the memory. This is caused by the device ripping the memory into pieces and distributing them amongst the individuals within its range. The closer one is to the device when the memory is played, the higher percentage of the memory that person will receive.

Attempting to reconstruct a memory after it is divided has proven successful in the past, however, its state once complete is often jumbled and heavily altered by the various perceptions of those who held pieces of it. Due to this, it is general suggested to simply take care when using the device, as to prevent such situations from occurring.

Idiosyncratic Storage

Idiosyncratic storage is the process of preserving a significant majority of an individual's mind and memory bank — approximately 87% — which leaves them in a husk-like state. Individuals in this condition are commonly referred to as "hosts" or "blanks". The memories extracted from the host can then be stored or discarded, and the owner of the Cassette — aided by a secondary individual — can replicate the process and transfer the owner's memories into the host's body. This procedure essentially enables a Cassette owner to exchange bodies, thereby extending their lifespan indefinitely and granting them immortality1 — as long as they have access to a constant supply of hosts when required.

It is this capability that renders Object 39 as valuable and highly sought after to the general public as it is, offering individuals the option to abandon their damaged or dying bodies and substantially increase their expected lifetime.

Despite the numerous moral questions it raises, this practice is widely accepted by most groups and individuals.

The majority of known instances of the device are held by high-ranking individuals in major factions, with The Eyes of Argos being the largest holder, possessing a total of five confirmed instances.
