Level 691 is the 692nd Level of The Backrooms. This Level is presumably an endless grid-patterned landscape.

Description:

Level 691 is an apparently endless, grid-patterned landscape inhabited by a steady population of wanderers. The Level is notably home to a large number of Blub Cats, whose docile and affectionate behavior is widely believed to contribute to the Level’s reputation as a desirable place of residence. Wanderers are encouraged to interact with these entities, as they provide reliable companionship and have not demonstrated hostility. While Deathmoths have been rumored to inhabit the Level, no confirmed sightings have been documented, and such reports are generally considered unsubstantiated.

Nearly all surfaces within Level 691 exhibit a consistent grid pattern. The ground presents as a flat white plane overlaid with a light grey grid, while buildings display varying colors beneath the same uniform pattern. The sky appears as a pastel purple field, similarly overlaid with a grid structure. Notably, naturally occurring flora, including trees and shrubs, do not display this pattern. The cause of this inconsistency remains undetermined. Additionally, objects confirmed to originate within the Level do not exhibit grid patterning, further complicating efforts to determine its source. Resources within Level 691 are abundant. Bottles of Almond Water are frequently encountered throughout the environment, and Star Candy can often be recovered from residential structures. Bodies of water present within the Level consistently test as Almond Water, providing a renewable and reliable supply.

Level 691 contains a large number of residential and commercial structures, most of which are structurally sound and suitable for long-term habitation. As a result, a significant portion of wanderers elect to remain within these buildings for extended periods. Wireless network access is consistently available throughout the Level, with numerous connections detectable in all surveyed areas. The origin of these networks remains unknown. All identified connections share the SSID 'PaintSplatter', from which the Level derives its informal designation1. Network stability is moderate; signal strength typically fluctuates between two and three bars, with intermittent disconnections reported. Despite this, connectivity is generally sufficient for basic communication and device usage.

The Citizens of Level 691:

  • This consists of all the wanderers residing in Level 691.
  • The exact population of Level 691 remains undetermined. Recorded estimates have remained fixed at approximately 1,000 individuals, despite continued immigration.
  • These Wanderers stay near the 'center' of the Level, and not many reside further.

Discovery:

Level 691 was first documented following multiple reports of a grid-patterned structure appearing anomalously within Level 11. Initial accounts described the structure as “out of place,” prompting further investigation after similar reports were submitted to The M.E.G. throughout 2020, many of which included consistent visual depictions of a grid-patterned environment. In response, a small M.E.G. scout unit, designated Team 'Gridlock,' was deployed to investigate the anomaly. The team successfully established initial entry into Level 691 and transmitted preliminary data confirming the Level’s habitability, structural consistency, and resource availability.

Shortly after initial contact, all communication with Team 'Gridlock' ceased. No distress signals or evacuation attempts were recorded. The cause of this loss of contact remains unknown. Despite this, subsequent expeditions have confirmed the presence of multiple stable entry points. All known entrances consistently deposit individuals within close proximity2 to a tall, dark grey structure believed to have served as Team 'Gridlock's primary point of operation. Later exploration efforts have reported no confirmed trace of Team 'Gridlock', and their status is currently classified as missing.
