Description:

Backshrooms (known otherwise by the taxonomic name Aregnaceae) comprise a diverse family of mushrooms residing exclusively in the Backrooms. The family is separated into 4 genera1 with a total of 12 known species.

Backshrooms are distinguished from typical mushrooms by the pattern under their caps. As the spore-carrying gills extend to the tip of the cap, they join into pairs at the ends to resemble chevron arrows — alike to those found on Level 0's wallpaper. Backshrooms are present in nearly all levels of the Backrooms in varying population levels, though environments with more readily available nutrients (i.e. containing an abundance of soil, decayed organic matter, etc.) are more likely to cultivate a greater diversity of Backshrooms. Most Backshrooms are highly symbiotic with other species or otherwise reactive with objects unique to the Backrooms.

Anomalous Microorganisms:

The family Aregnaceae stemmed from a single mushroom ancestor that noclipped from Earth to the Backrooms. Because nutrients in the Backrooms were far less readily available, requiring extremely specialized environments or traits, the family of mushrooms was pressured to undergo severe evolutionary changes to survive. Consequently, they developed more sophisticated means of nutrient storage and opened themselves to a broader diet. As their microbiomes reached a certain transitionary stage, the mushrooms had coincidentally created a viable environment for entities known as Xenoplankton.

Xenoplankton, alongside all other anomalous life of the Backrooms, fall under the group Anomalobasia2; these lifeforms are characterized by psychodominous bonds that allow their properties to bypass the typical laws of baseline reality. While some anomalous entities grew into larger niches, Xenoplankton shrunk to microscopic sizes at approximately 50 micrometers in diameter. These anomalous microorganisms, though simple, can still effectively thrive in nearly all environments of the Backrooms through their rapid reproductive rate and wide range of properties. Because mutations are exceedingly prevalent in Xenoplankton, they can bypass reality in a number of ways to their advantage.

Genus Psychomitus

The genus Psychomitus is characterized by caps that possess chemicals specialized towards affecting the minds of animals. Members of this genus typically have thick, pale stalks and grow on dead organic matter.

[[tab Cinnamon Shrooms]]
Psychomitus Reliciens or, Cinnamon Shrooms, are one of the most common species of Backshrooms, growing in most of the Main Nine levels. They are identified by their smooth, pale-brown caps, which smell vaguely of cinnamon, along with off-white stalks that typically root from steep surfaces such as trees or earthy walls. As per their namesake, Cinnamon Shroom caps have a sweet, cinnamon-like taste, alongside providing stress-relieving effects when consumed. The microbiomes of Cinnamon Shrooms primarily assist in rapidly reproducing and spreading across various environments.
