The first recovered photo of Level 992, found in an abandoned backpack in Level 5. A note found with the photograph reads "7/8/2021, found a new level, tell Eric." This is likely the date of the level's true discovery.

Level 992 or "The Foggy Roadway" is the 993rd level of the Backrooms. It consists primarily of an endless road with bends and turns, and varying landscapes on either side, as well as constant rainy and foggy weather.

Description

Level 992 takes the form of a road that seems to stretch on endlessly. The level is constantly shrouded in heavy fog and rain of varying intensities, but never enough to completely fade away. The level seems to lack a day and night cycle as well, as the level never dims or brightens. The level seems to be similar to Level 0 in the way that no two wanderers will ever see each other within the level. The level can be divided into three major categories; The Road, The Town, and The Lake.

The Road and landscape

The road consists of the focus point of the level. It takes the form of a well-kept street that stretches on a seemingly endless distance in both directions. At times the road seems regular to that of The Frontrooms, but at other points the road goes up at an impossible to climb angle, or turns so sharp that no vehicle could make the turn. The road seems to flex and bend accordingly to fit the surrounding terrain, as such we have the impossibly vertically angled roads that climb the sides of steep hills. On occasion guardrails will appear on the side of the road, most commonly when an instance of The Lake occurs, when the road goes up a steep slope, and when the road makes turns on the tops of slopes, no matter how steep. One consistency with the level is its terrain, in that its always grassy outside of the roads, and the grass never gets long, seemingly always being maintained, as well as being constantly wet in some way shape or form. Small puddles tend to line the edge of the road, unless illogical, like during curves up or down. No buildings or any sort of signs of human life outside of the street itself are present, excluding the town. The road itself seems to never deteriorate, always looking freshly painted, but the paint never running in the rain.

The Town

The town is as the name suggests, a town. It consists of one central dirt path, with four houses on the left, four houses on the right, and one house at the very end of the road. All of the houses take the same appearance, that being a square suburban home of two floors with an a-frame roof. No windows exist on the building, and a single door exists on the front of each building, but its boarded up and un-enterable. The color of the houses seems to vary between each wanderers account of the level, the most common colors of the houses from the reports are: red, blue, magenta, grey, orange, turquois, navy blue, brown, pink, forest green, and lime green. These colors seem to have no meaning however, as none of the houses are enterable. Nothing seems to exist in or around these houses, except for the house at the end of the road, which can be used as an entrance to Level 220. A perfectly square white picket fence lines the border of the town, and while within the fence the fog seems unnaturally clear, except for a wall of fog that hugs the fence, as if some invisible barrier is stopping it from entering the town. Individual members of The M.E.G. are investigating the town to see why the fog cannot enter the towns borders.

A photo of the lake gifted to a M.E.G. operative by a wanderer named June, before the level had been explored by the M.E.G..

The Lake

The Lake consists of a large and varyingly shaped and sized body of water, that seems to go down endlessly. At the points where the water touches the land, the land plumets down at a vertical incline, making the lake more of an infinitely deepening hole filled with water. The lake is completely devoid of any life within, however, the water within is oceanic salt water, making it unsafe to consume. The water's reactivity to light is strange, as it seems to absorb all light while maintaining a murky and navy blue appearance. Ripples and small waves are constantly tugging at the water's surface, the rippling is explainable via the rain present within the level, but the cause of the waves is yet to be found. Not much else can be noted about the lake, except for the exit to Level 7, which involves the wanderer diving under the surface of the water and swimming down. The the M.E.G. heavily advises against this method.

Bases, Outposts and Communities

Due to the nature of the level, no outposts or communities can be formed.

Psychological Anomalies

If the wander remains within the level for extended periods of time, they will begin to experience increasingly dangerous psychological hazards.1 Most anomalies take around fifteen minutes or so to set in, these anomalies are:

  • Hearing entity related sounds, or even hallucinating the sight of entities, like Smilers, Deathmoths, and Skin-Stealers, despite there being no entities within the level.
  • The sensation of being touched by what's been described as a cold and slimy humanoid hand. Moreover, no residue has ever been left behind by said slimy humanoid hand.
  • Hallucinating the sight of doors of all varieties placed in the fog.
  • Hearing or seeing loved ones.
  • Intense sensations of thirst or hunger.
  • Uncomfortable levels of paranoia.
  • Memory loss and disorientation.

Entrances And Exits

Entrances2

  • Falling asleep on any angle numbered level (Level 111, Level 222, Level 333, etc.) will cause the wanderer to awaken in Level 992.3
  • A road in Level 9 with thick fog can lead to Level 992.
  • It's theorized that jumping from the road in Level 360 may lead the wanderer here, however this is unconfirmed.

Exits

  • Diving into and remaining in the lake for a few minutes will send the wanderer to Level 7.
  • Entering the farthest house will lead the wanderer to Level 220
  • Wandering out into the fog has the chance to send the wanderer to Level 466, Level 811, or Level 901.
