Description
Level 338 is the 339th level of the Backrooms. It has been given the name "Black Sands" due to the huge amounts of dark and black sand within the level. Level 338 has been designated as a "Deadzone" due to its significant dangers and the difficulty of finding an exit. Exploration of Level 338 is strongly discouraged because of the immediate hazards encountered upon entry.
Level 338 resembles a vast, seemingly infinite desert with dark and black sands. The sky remains an unchanging shade of gray. A faint mist pervades the entire level, obscuring visibility but having no other apparent effect. Despite the absence of a sun or any other light source, there is constant illumination from one direction. The temperature is constantly fluctuating between 12°C (53.6°F) and 57°C (134.6°F), the highest temperature recorded in the level was about 82°C (179.6°F). Two types of sand have been identified within Level 338:
1. Dark Sand: This is the most common type of sand in the level. It appears to be composed of metal or another heat and pressure-resistant material. Dark sand is harmless unless it touches bare skin, at which point it begins a process similar to oxidation, transforming into Black Sand. During this conversion, the sand starts to burn through people and objects. Therefore, it is strongly advised not to touch any sand without proper protection.
2. Black Sand: This more dangerous type of sand is almost indistinguishable from Dark Sand. The properties of Black Sand are not fully understood. When it comes into contact with anything other than other sand, it sticks to it. Black Sand also adheres to other Black Sand, making it more difficult to move when stepping on or interacting with it.

Hazards
1. Hurricanes: Some wanderers have encountered hurricanes made from Black Sand that suck in anyone who gets too close. The fate of those sucked in is unknown, though it is speculated that they suffer a prolonged demise beneath tens of meters of Black Sand without being able to escape.
2. Mirages: A few wanderers have reported experiencing mirages in the desert. These mirages appear differently to each individual, but they all share the common feature of including food and water. Approaching a mirage induces a feeling of comfort, though the source of this feeling is unknown. This comforting sensation dissipates when attempting to touch any object within the mirage, revealing that the objects are made of Dark Sand and will turn to Dark Sand upon contact.
Bases, Outposts, and Communities
Due to the nature of the level no outposts have been set up here.
Entrances and Exits
Entrances
It is possible to enter Level 338 from Level 46, Level 229 or Level 440 by going far enough into the desert where the sand begins to lose its color.
Exits
Currently only 1 exit has been found, though inconsistent. By going around the desert it is possiblt find a patch of sand with some color left, by no-clipping though that sand you will end up in Level 440.
