An outdoor look at one of the factories.

Level 161 is the 162nd Level of the Backroooms. It was discovered on May 4th, 2021. The discoverer has since gone missing, and cannot be contacted, implying that they died within the level.

Description:

Level 161 appears to be an infinite factory complex, bearing resemblance to Levels 56, 113, and 172. Level 161 is similar to these levels in that it is an industrial area with factories, however, the factories in this level appear far more industrial and dense than in Level 172. These factories possess features such as excessive piping, lots of catwalks, and inactive machinery. Most of these machines do not function properly, if at all.

These factories may appear spacious on the outside, but on the inside, most are mainly a mess of hallways and compact rooms with machinery, sometimes appearing as if they were the insides of an offshore oil rig, cargo boat, or Level 141.1 Few of the factories actually have large, spacious interiors. Most of the volume of the factories are various machinery and pipes hidden behind the walls. Occasionally, the factories may also contain miscellaneous supplies, such as food, weapons, or [[object 1|Almond Water]]. at various locations.

The outdoor environment in Level 161 is always at a temperature between 50 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit (or 10 to 24 degrees celcius), and it is always night. It is also normally raining. The rain water is Almond Water, but with a high salinity, comparable to that of Frontrooms ocean water. Sometimes, if it is not raining, the sky will resemble the first signs of sunrise, with the horizon becoming slightly brighter. This phenomenon does not last long, always vanishing after it starts raining again. During this occurrence, the sky of Level 161 is at its brightest, regardless of how long it may take for it to start raining again. This does not always occur when it stops raining.

The level appears to be fully powered with electricity, which has been confirmed to be originating from generators within the level itself. They are powered by various, normally non-renewable sources, which never seem to deplete. The factories appear to be active from the outside, and emit smoke and steam from columns on the ceilings. However, most factories do not do anything, aside from the aforementioned generators. Solar panels can sometimes be spotted within the level. They are functional, though they cannot serve their purpose, as the sun never rises within Level 161.

Due to emitted smoke and steam, the air quality within Level 161 is noticeably poor, and people with asthma are not recommended to traverse this level. Wanderers are advised to bring protective gear such as face masks to assist with breathing.

Causing damage to the factories is possible, as they have no self-regenerative properties and are not indestructible.

The level seems to have an excessive population of Hounds, suggesting various connections to The Hive. It also contains various other entities, notably Wretches, but it also contains entities such as Deathmoths, Clumps, and in some rare cases, Smilers. Level 161 is also one of the few levels which contain Splats.

The level also houses a unique entity, known as "Clunkers," which inhabit the interiors of some factories, mainly ones with large, spacious rooms. They are amalgamations of assorted pieces of machinery, such as furnaces, robotic arms, pipes, and other various machines. They act and behave autonomously, but do not appear to have any sort of central processing unit. Each Clunker is different from the others, and can sometimes be equipped with weapons such as buzz saws or drills. They mainly inhabit the more spacious rooms in the factories, so it is advised to not enter these larger rooms.

Clunkers can also be seen doing maintenance on various machines (despite the fact said machines are normally nonfunctional regardless), and will attempt to repair any infrastructure that is damaged or destroyed, including entire factories. They are also mostly hostile to any travellers within the realm, including most other Entities, implying that they are the caretakers of Level 161, and that they are displeased with any altercation of their realm.

Other than the Entity population, Level 161, and has no adverse physical or mental affects on wanderers, besides the potential for transforming into a Wretch. Otherwise, it is possible to remain in Level 161 for long periods of time.

M.E.G. (Major Explorer Group) Base Theta

  • A factory claimed and used as a base by the M.E.G.
  • Currently has a population of ≈40 people.
  • Secured from entities and entity attacks.
  • Not hostile, open to trade.

Unnamed B.N.T.G. outpost

  • The Backrooms National Trade Group's base within Level 161, stationed within another abandoned factory.
  • Population of ≈15 people.
  • Not as secured as M.E.G. Base Theta, still considerably safe from entities.
  • Not hostile, open to trade.

Entrances And Exits:

Entrances

If you go down a hallway with excessive piping in levels where they appear, they can lead you to Level 161. Most of the time, they will look noticeably different than the other hallways, so it is easy to notice a potential entrance. However, sometimes, the entrance will not be completely obvious. Because of this, it is easy to seamlessly wander into Level 161.

Levels that you can enter Level 161 from include:

Level 161 can be entered via means other than these hallways, such as:

  • Exiting Level 12 via the normal exit process has a chance to take you to Level 161
  • Noclipping in the scrapyards of Level 817 has a very small chance of taking you to Level 161.
  • Exiting The Hive through it's tunnels can take you to Level 161

Exits

*You can exit through any hallway you used to enter the level.
*Fully submerging yourself in any lakes or pools of water will take you to Level 66. If you can simultaneously noclip while doing this, you can end up in Level -2 instead.
*Entrances to Level 654 can be found at random throughout the level.
*Noclipping can take you to levels 0, 1, and 2, as if you had attempted to enter said levels via The Frontrooms.
