SURVIVAL DIFFICULTY:
Class Ψ
- Unsafe
- Unsecure
- Mental Hazard
The pattern found on the walls of level 76.
Description
This1 level is comprised of an infinite array of walls that are arranged in the shape of a Hilbert curve.2 When attempting to map the level, it appears as if it acts like a fractal. The walls always seem to be exactly 1 meter apart at the nearest point at the entrance however, the hallways seem to slightly decrease in size each time a corner is passed. The corners are always at a 90 degree angle. The halls seem to be never ending though there have been dead ends reported. It is unknown whether or not this level is truly infinite.
The level is completely grayscale in color. It is unknown whether this is a result of unnatural lighting that is found in the level or other external sources. All walls are found to feature a black-and-white H-tree fractal3, which, upon inspection, seems to be infinitely iterated. It is unknown how these marking came to be. The more the wanderer looks at the patterns the harder it is to look away as they will begin to become fixated on the patterns as if lulled into a hypnotic state. Once a wanderer is stuck in this trance they seemingly disappear. The walls are made of an unknown material that seems to resemble osmium in density.
On the level's ceiling, there are large square lights that take up exactly 33.3̅ centimeters. The lights seemingly emit a strong, white light, and seem to flicker on intervals consistent with the wanderer’s current heartbeat. Attempts to reach the lights have all failed. The lights almost seem to simply be an illusion. No other sources of light work in this level. The lighting stays constant as if the lights on the ceiling are completely useless. It is unclear if there is actually any lighting at all or if the level manifests in the wanderers imagination as a sort of hallucination. Nothing in the level is able to cast a visible shadow.4
The level is completely devoid of any sound. No sound can be created or heard as if sound waves are unable to be created or something is muffling them. The only sound that has been reported is the ringing in the wanderer’s ears and their heartbeat. One theory is the radiation from the material of the walls plays a part in the nullification of sound in this level. Another is that the H-tree patterns act an extremely powerful sound canceling mechanic.
Prolonged exposure to the combination of the lack of color and sound is thought to cause a loss of sense of self in wanderers and even insanity though the wretch cycle does not occur here.
No items have ever been found in the level. All items dropped or left cannot be found if taken out of sight as if the level consumes them. No remains of any wanderers have ever been found nor has any evidence of their existence. This leads to the belief that there is something that collects remains and items.5
The following is an excerpt from a journal recovered from an unknown source by a Wanderer on level 5.
Entities
There are no known entities on this level6 though some wanderers have reported seeing a shadow at the edge of their vision. When the shadow appears their heartbeat and the ringing in their ears goes silent.
Bases, Outposts and Communities
There are no known bases, outposts or communities on this level.
Entrances And Exits
Entrances
The only known entrance to Level 76 is through doors in Level √2 with the label √5776.7
Exits
It is believed that seeing color in the level may bring you salvation via death, but seeing a faint human silhouette means that the wanderer is becoming a part of the fractals.8
