A young woman stood in a cramped hallway made up of concrete, ash gray bricks, and bulky air ducts, the area being dimly lit by a few light bulbs that emanated a strong yellow light and flickered every few seconds. It was still better than having no electricity, as it was quite rare for somewhere this further into Level 33. The hall looked to be quite dusty, with shelves and knocked-over ladders that all looked worn out. The broken-down wooden mannequins added an eerie atmosphere to the place, as well as the rusted metal door in front of the woman. The door appeared to have been pried open, leading to a wide, but short, hallway with insulation covering the pipes that hung below the ceiling. Despite the warm atmosphere, the woman wore a thick, leather coat, and had been standing in the area for quite some time. There was a still body in the middle of the corridor, lying with no clear reason as to why.

The woman got closer to the corpse; she would usually try to imagine the situation of lost people in their final moments. It usually both served her as a way to ignore the fact that she was quite bored, and to understand the situation that led to the current condition. She took a closer look at their face; it was full of melancholy, though that was the expression she would most commonly see when there was a dead person. As the woman looked at the corpse, someone descended the stairwell, and the floorboards creaked as they went. The woman spoke; they knew who the person was.

— Gani.

— I guess this corroded area is the crime scene. No wonder someone died here, poor guy…

— Yeah. I came here about… a few minutes ago.

— Is the investigation going well?

— Not at all. Their identity remains as John Doe.

— I see. Any other clues?

— Well… after inspecting the body, I can say that they're Frontrooms born and that they were in their early twenties. Their backpack doesn't contain anything related to a known group of interest, which is really weird considering they made it this far. I might send the dead body over to the M.E.G. to check for possible damages, and such.

— Well, they must have come here for a good reason. You don't find a dead body in what I assume to be a sub-section every day.

— Nope, no sign at all. And, I'm hoping you're joking about the sub-section thingy.

A small moment of awkward silence washed over both of them.

— Though, I actually have no idea how they got here. What do you think?

— Well, let me see first…

Gani walked up near the dead body, as the weird smell made them feel hazy. The person had a small, blunt injury on their head, and scars indicating they had fought with an entity. The deceased seemed to have a personal journal, two flashlights, a few supplies, and some bandages.

— No rigor mortis. This either happened really recently, or at least a day before.

— And yet, we haven't got a reason on how, and why they got here.

Gani tried to think of a response, as to how the person could have got here, but nothing came out of their mouth.

It wasn't about the body, but they sensed something was terribly wrong; the layout of the hallway, the metal pipes hanging out, the insulation… it was also obvious that the place would stretch longer if they went through the door that would perfectly blend in with the walls, if it wasn't opened. Gani spoke again after a moment of silence.

— We can only theorise right now, actually finding the meaning of this would mean that we… would have to go deeper.

— What do you mean deeper? Isn't this Level 33?

Gani held one of the body's hands; it was still warm. They turned their head towards Alice with a somewhat stern expression. Alice could feel as the tension formed between the two of them.

— Well, they still seem warm…

— … And?

— I think they died minutes ago.

— Well, that answers my question.

Gani already caught on to Alice's sarcasm, but they had to leave immediately. Gani's expression hardened.

— Alright then, here's what we do: Take pictures, and leave immediately with the body. Then, we report this to the M.E.G., and get them in an MRI machine to figure out whether they have an illness, or were affected by an entity.

— We should stay. We're not leaving examination mid-session.

— We're going to die here if you keep acting like this. Look, just take the body, and make a run for it. I'll collect samples, and let a M.E.G. base know—

— Why the M.E.G.? It's just Level 33, there’s nothing we can't handle!

— What do you mean 'why the M.E.G.?' This place is nothing Like a mall! I— I mean, the entrance to whatever this is already looks to be pried open! Alice, does this hallway even look like Level 33 to you?

— Well…

It doesn't.

—

After Alice finished hauling the unidentified body out of the strange, basement-like area with the help of Gani, they made their way back to Level 11 via the latter individual’s hearse, where Alice would be dropped off at M.E.G. Base Beta’s medical wing to have the body examined by the base’s coroner. As she unloaded the body from the back of the hearse and placed it onto a metal cart meant for these kinds of situations, her mind began to wander, further thinking to herself about that area in Level 33.

She knew it didn’t look like the rest of that run-down area of the mall, so it could’ve been someplace like a sub-level or a newly-discovered entrance to The Basement. It didn’t feel right, though… it somehow felt different compared to those levels. Despite there being other features such as rusted metal doors in that mall or the damaged furniture and other objects in that level, or whatever that place was, it was the fiberglass insulation that bothered her the most. That damned insulation. She didn’t know why it bothered her so much, but it just felt so wrong to call it someplace like The Basement. She kept thinking deeper about the place, until she was interrupted by a familiar voice.

— Uhh, Alice? You okay?

Alice snapped back to reality in an instant and realized where she was. She had absentmindedly made her way to the coroner’s office in Base Beta with the deceased body, and was now standing in front of the coroner, Freddie.

— Oh, hey Freddie.

— You doing alright, sis? You seemed kinda distracted there for a moment.

— Yeah, just having the typical thoughts you get after having to haul another dead body here. It’s nice to see you again, though.

— Nice to see you too, Alice!

Alice had lied, as she didn’t want her brother thinking she was crazy for obsessing over the features of some random area on Level 33 that she wasn’t sure was even a level of note.

— Speaking of dead bodies, I’ve got one for you right here. We only know them as John Doe. They look to be in their early twenties, has green eyes and messy brown hair, and is wearing a white t-shirt with cargo pants, which are torn in a few places and are stained with both fresh sweat and blood. Seems like they suffered several cuts into their flesh by what I presume to be one or more entities, but if I were to guess, the blunt force trauma to their head was what finished them off. This all seemed to have happened recently, by the way.

— I see. I’ll let you bring the body in so I can run the tests. Might take about three to five hours to complete, so please give me some time.

— Dawg, I’ve been bringing bodies over to you since March of last year, I’ve got the memo.

— Yeah, that’s fair.

— I’m gonna head back home since that was my last report that I needed to do today. Although, before I go, is there anything else you need?

— Nah, I can handle everything. Thanks, though.

— Of course, I’ll see you later, Freddie.

Alice lay on top of her bed after a long shift, cuddled with her plush bear, which was the only thing left for her from the Frontrooms. "I'm still lucky," she thought, while staring at the teddy bear. It was still better than nothing.
She was in her apartment dorm, in Level 11, which could be considered a twilight zone due to her having all the curtains shut closed. Despite the darkness of the bedroom, she could spot the silhouette of the furtniture, and the layout of the dorm. She had lived in here for 12 years now.
With having nothing better to do, she checked her smart-phone.
The clock showed 19:49, it was her time of the hour to relax, and take a break. But she felt an overwhelming creep, that nothing could explain what it was about. Was someone in her dorm? Was there going to be an apocalypse?

She tried to brush the feeling off; it was impossible for someone to break in anyway. The door was completely secure, and she lived on the third floor. What was she so afraid of, then?

Suddenly, at the amidst of her train of thoughts, Alice received a message. It was her brother, Freddy.

Hey, sis. I found something terrible. It's about the body you and Gani found.

What? Wdym dewd? What happened?


I'm pretty sure the body was somewhat unidentifiable, right?

Oh my goddd fineee

Alice couldn't believe she was left off by her brother, again. She recalled that it was strange for her brother to keep information hidden, even when it was in the wrong place, and at the wrong time.

— Well, time to go, I guess.

Alice put on her formal wear, put on her makeup, and looked at her pitch-black room one last time, gazing into the room with the apartment lights to make sure she hadn't missed anything.

She was going to Level 4.

The sound of leather boots echoed throughout the halls as she made her way over to her brother's office; the air was eerily silent. Some of the lights were turned off, as almost everyone working in Base Beta was either away or sleeping. The glass door leading to the office let most of the light in the room through, which made it look especially eye-catching.

Alice sighed once, then pushed towards the (also glass) doorknob.

There, her brother was, staring down at what looked to be a cadaver table, with what she assumed to be the corpse she found on Level 33. Freddy had a grim expression, one really unlike him. Freddy noticed Alice entering his room as the door squeaked, which was a warning sign that it needed fixing.

— You came.

Freddy immediately spoke, while turning around, he now faced Alice.

— I'm gonna keep this extremely short. Can you look at the body? His face, I mean.

Alice gazed upon his face; it hadn't decayed yet. Maybe it was stored in the morgue, but Alice didn't feel like touching his face. She sensed some sort of familiarity, even though she would have seen it if the corpse was someone familiar.

Wait.

She remembered something Freddy said through text, and looked at her phone again.

"And now, I realise why Zackary went missing. Come to the coroner's office in Base Beta."

It couldn't be. It really couldn't be Zackary. It couldn't be the person best at survival among her peers. It couldn't be one of her friends; it just couldn't be.

— What the hell?! I mean, wh- WHAT?! THAT'S ZACKARY?!

— I guess that didn't need explaining.

Freddy walked over to the other side of the room -which wasn't that far- to a bookshelf, mostly containing books concerning his job. He pulled out a piece of paper, which was neatly folded in a beige-red notebook. After returning, he gently put the paper on his desk, for Alice to see. It was an autopsy report of Zackary.

— Look, I— I'm sorry! I'm just… having a hard time processing all this. I mean, I never expected to find him in a random place in Level 33, dead…

Alice shed a small tear; it wasn't often that she lost friends, even though death was extremely common in the Backrooms.

A moment of awkward silence filled the room as they both stared at Zackary's lifeless vessel. He didn't even look like the same person to Alice; he had even lost quite some weight.

— At the very least, you guys know what happened to him? I haven't caught up on the murder since I gave him to you.

— I mean, there's his journal, I guess. I kinda skimmed it, but it would probably interest you more.

— Yeah, sure...
