Level 7

Your kind is interesting. You think you're so clever because you can run from things, because you can band together and take down whatever might be trying to hunt you… but you always forget that when it truly comes down to it, you're all still soft and pink. No teeth or claws. Just flesh.

Level 7’s Survival Guide

Due to the unreasonably hostile conditions of Level 7, the following is a rough survival guide for those attempting to traverse the level:

The entrance room should be treated as a home base, and trips into the ocean should be as short as possible before returning. Dropping a rope or ladder from the doorway to the surface of the ocean is essential, as it is the only conceivable way to climb back up to safety.

Though the temperature of Level 7’s ocean is extremely low, it is not lethal except in cases of extremely long-term exposure. And in some cases you can hold your breath for as long as 30 minutes. These two factors make the seemingly impossible swimming conditions surprisingly manageable even without diving gear.

The two entities of the level are of the most concern. Confrontation should be avoided at all costs, and communication with Tiny should only take place from the safety of the entrance room or an island. Though a fight with either entity is a death sentence, the Thing’s life in perpetual darkness makes its eyes much more sensitive to light, and Tiny’s incredibly strong sense of hearing makes him susceptible to loud noises. By using these two factors, it is possible to subdue both entities for long enough to explore with minimal reduced risk.

Description

The 7th level of the Backrooms is the last of the initial twelve whose environment is open. An endless ocean where several abandoned structures are very common. It is cold and sunny but there are only two entities that are a threat. And the most common way out is hampered by the depths of the ocean.

Given a choice, wanderers are warned to avoid it altogether.

The Ocean

Another photograph of the surface waters of Level 7, from a currently photographed camera.

Level 7, known as "Thalassophobia", is known for its vast, endless sea that stretches indefinitely. Level 7 is covered in a moderately dense fog, as it only allows vision for no more than a few hundred meters. The water is extremely cold, measuring 20 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately -7 degrees Celsius). The depth of the ocean is unknown, as it extends far below the surface into an abyss of unknown or even infinite depth. You can find marine life on the surface of the sea and people hunt it because there are few species of marine life in Level 7.

It does not contain any kind of marine life, or any marine living being existing in the depths of the water. And the deeper you go, the darkness lurks in every corner and you will find corpses more often.

Surprisingly, the water in the level is perfectly clean and considered safe to drink, provided it is heated for an extended period of time. No traveler has ever explored Level 7 in depth due to its treacherous conditions, and no one will ever venture far enough to sufficiently document the level's boundless ocean.

In addition to this, the air above the surface contains an unknown property that allows those who breathe it in to hold their breath for considerably longer than normal—almost 30 minutes in some cases.

The deeper you go, the more human skeletons you'll find, and every kilometer is a new zone. And each of these seven zones are called: The Daylight Zone, The Twilight Zone, The Midnight Zone and one more that is different from the others.

Any depth below seven kilometres from the surface is considered to be too dangerous to explore, with the longest recorded exploration of the Abyss lasting just under two minutes. The Abyss is sparsely decorated with mountainous piles of tar and rock, with a steady bubbling emanating from an unknown source below. This zone is also densely populated by the aforementioned humanoid skeletons, most of which have been eroded in some regard by the immense pressure. Little else is known about the depths of the waters, aside from rumours of a cave entrance in one of the underwater mountains that are said to lead to Level 8.

The Entrace

Missing alt text.

An old photograph of one of the rooms at the entry point.

Although when you enter the level you will be at a specific point where everyone always arrives.

Level 7 is largely unexplored, but is understood to be comprised of two rooms: the entrance room and the "room" containing the ocean itself, with a high concrete ceiling suspended above the water. The entrance room appears to be the most accessible access point to level 7, as it is directly at the bottom of the stairs from Level 6. This entrance room is the most habitable point of the level, and should be used as a base for those who dare to explore the ocean below.

This room is fully furnished, with a bookshelf against the left wall containing several books of unknown origin, a small coffee table, a single chair, and a fluorescent light fixture on the ceiling. The carpeted floor is covered with a shallow pool of water, no deeper than a puddle. Across the room from the staircase to Level 6, is the door leading to the ocean.

Any explorer hoping to traverse Level 7 should be aware that the center of gravity within the entrance room is different than the rest of the level. The entrance room appears to be built sideways into the ceiling of Level 7, with the door opening directly onto the water from a top-down perspective. 1 Anything directly in front of the open door will have its gravity adjusted to that of the ocean, leading to several unfortunate wanderers falling through the door into the waters "below."

The Sunken Ships

Missing alt text.

A very old photograph of abandoned ships in a not very deteriorated state.

The deeper you go you can find sunken and abandoned ships, some of which have nothing useful. The ships are a 10km wide saline marine area surrounding a seemingly endless replica of the wreck of the British ocean liner RMS Titanic.

Almost all of the ships are in an advanced state of decay as the metal used to build them disintegrates. The estimated age of the structures is approximately 300 years based on metal samples and the state of decay, in contrast to their real counterpart, which is 108 years old.

The ships are where marine life and marine entities, apparently the hive of aquatic beings of this level, take refuge from the entities inhabiting the place, since it has been observed that all the entities of this level roaming around, live and reproduce inside them. Therefore, it is not recommended to enter.

Ecology

As for entities, there is reportedly only one on Level 7. Alone in the frigid waters, The Fish seems to have wiped out all other life in the ocean.

For many years, Level 7 was believed to have only one entity, the infamous The Fish. As of April 18th, 2019, Level 7 is now inhabited by another entity, who goes by the name Tiny. The combined ferocity and physical prowess of both entities have left the entire rest of the ocean completely uninhabited, making them the primary sources of danger within the level. Both entities appear to be matched only by one another in terms of speed, strength, and detection and are to be avoided by all means necessary.

So far, Tiny has been shown to stick to shallow waters in search of easier prey, while The Fish makes his home in the deep ocean. It's unclear how or why, but the two seem to have a mutually assured destruction agreement, preventing each other from hunting outside of their designated territories.

The Fish has little information on specific details so far, as it has only been seen by a handful of travelers. It appears to be the only one of its species left, and is highly intelligent; although unable to speak, it can write. It is omnivorous and brutal and seems to care little for humans, as it has stated when questioned. It is a black, snake-like figure said to be approximately 11 thousand meters long, with no features except for a large mouth that is only visible when open and is large enough to swallow a small hotel whole. This mouth takes up a third of its face, with 10-meter-long sharp teeth inside. It is said to hunt for movement.

It sees and circles its potential victims in a manner similar to that of a shark. It has been known to expel large amounts of tar from its skin in some situations, the causes of which are unknown.

Tiny is a humanoid entity residing almost completely uncontested in the freezing waters of Level 7. Standing at around 244 centimeters, this entity can reach swimming speeds of up to 80 mph and has been shown to survive rapid changes in depth and water pressure with ease.

Tiny is believed to be the main reason as to the emptiness of his home, as his only competition, The Fish, only seems to inhabit the lowest reaches of the ocean. This is further evidenced by the fact that Tiny is always seen wearing the hide of what appears to be another fish-like entity.

Settlements and Communities

Even larger groups are attempting to build a boat in which people can take shelter and survive for a longer period of time. Although they are still planning and it is not known whether it will work or be aborted altogether.

Fort Surrender is historically the only settlement ever created in the ocean. Although it is far from being the oldest, its size and population are almost minimal. And they created the group for the purpose of survival and sacrificing new members to the only two entities on the level.

An outpost on the nearest recorded island consisted of a haphazardly constructed ship, built in the mid-20th century, and still littered with provisions and supplies, composed of broken furniture held together with tar. It is theorized that they worship the two entities in the ocean.

Entrances And Exits

Entrances

There are many ways to enter Level 7 although few entries have been documented for the level, although more entries can be found and recorded.

The most well-known entrance to Level 7 is by going into Level 6 and finding a flooded staircase, although due to the poor lighting you cannot see it clearly. This staircase is very long, almost 100 meters high, and the deeper you go, the more light you will see.

People report having reached Level 7 through a puddle of water on Level 8, although this is a hypothesis and cannot be verified if it is true.

Although after some time the Level -8 was discovered in which an entrance to this level was found. The first people to report the entrance did so by diving into the water wells found on one of the routes taken through the place.

When the tragic end of The Abandoned was discovered, no one came to this place and the few who documented the tragic end described how they got out of there by throwing themselves out the window at Level -13 before they went insane from the mental effects.

Another entry was found after some investigation on Level 23, when a person reported reaching Level 7 via the water tank.

When a person dove into the waters in the portal state at Level 60 he came here and reported to the people.

While some explorers were on Level 83 they came up with the idea of going outside the submarine, although after that no trace of them was found. It is rumored that The Fish found them and savagely devoured them.

Exits

Although Level 7 has few entries to date, the possibilities of leaving are many and depend on the danger of the place.

The most well-known exit to Level 7 can be found in an underwater cave on the side of a particularly tall mountain toward the bottom of the Midnight Zone. This mountain is almost directly below the entrance room, creating a straightforward (albeit lengthy) route to Level 8.

Though it is strongly discouraged, diving into the Abyss and going unconscious leads directly to Level 83.

As of 6/28/22, a new exit has been discovered roughly 150 meters west of the entrance room that leads directly to Level 9. This exit is approximately 150 meters below the surface and is marked by a collection of massive underwater pipes and stone pillars in a circular formation. In the centre of this formation is a wooden door built into the floor of a circular stone platform. Judging by the high quantity of skeletons and loose bone in the area, it is safe to assume this is where Tiny resides most of the time, so approach with extreme caution.

Many people have been reported to have found a light source, caused by a naval aircraft carrier. Going deeper into the place, people say they have reached Level 17, there are only probabilities of being able to find the aircraft carrier.

People have reported that while they were sailing on Level 7, the sky became a less blueish color than normal and they say they saw an island in the distance, although when they went deeper they realized they ended up on Level 29

A report warns of a metal hatch found in the sea a long time ago, from the beginning the existence of Level 76 was not known, but thanks to this another exit from Level 7 was discovered.

Recent speculation suggests that Level 7 may be connected in some way to other ocean levels, as several people have claimed to have travelled by boat to Level 880 by sailing extremely far to the west of the entrance room. This exit is unproven but is being looked into as a possibly safer exit to the level.
