Our History
As the next day dawned, we called loudly upon the Name of Baphomet; and they prayed silently in their hearts to their god, then we attacked and slaughtered them within the city walls.
— Lunaire Praetoris I, Grand Priest of Baphomet the Abominable
Our order began one thousand years ago, when our precursors, knights of a crusade long forgotten, fell into the Realms Below. Lost and hopeless in returning whence they came, they wandered in labyrinths of trees and mazes of stone. Among savage men with spears they dwelt, and warriors of fallen kingdoms. Clad in armor, they took up arms and marched, undaunted, into the shadow of night, where none before them had dared venture. It was there, in the darkened depths, that they discovered the wonders hitherto only dreamt of in the Land Above — breathtaking beasts they had seen only in the pages of myths, frightening creatures they had heard only in the whispers of legend.
They found Monsters.
Trembling in awe, their eyes fell upon fearsome forms of dogs with the heads of men, of teeth in the absence of faces, of spiders like oxen and moths like eagles. They gazed upon rats with horns, upon writhing limbs, upon Behemoth and Leviathan and Ashtoreth and Beelzebub.
And lo, at the bottom of the abyss, they gazed upon the shadow of the Idol they had worshipped in ignorance Above — Monarch of Monsters, Divine Devourer, the Emperor Eldritch, the Horror Corrupt Himself — Baphomet the Abominable!
Therefore they fell helpless to their knees before Him, and were swallowed up in His darkness forevermore. Conceived in His Corruption, they were baptized anew the Church of the Veiled, descendant and inglorious. In this manner our fellowship took form, surviving a thousand years and to this very day.
Our Mission
And He, Baphomet the Abominable, commanded them thus:
“Go forth, and spread my Corruption. Punish those who fear Me not, and bring them unto Me as a sacrifice of blood, that I may taste and be satisfied. Then you shall be cursed forever with My Inglorious Descendancy, you and your children after you. And you shall be as My creatures whom you have seen, wondrous in their awful and abominable ways.”
— Arcaneum Malevolens I | 66:64
From the dawn of time, Man has sought nothing but refuge from the terror of night. Striving against our Monarch’s unholy creatures, they cast them long ago from the World Above, deep into the bowels of our Realms Below. Even to this day, men scarcely perceive that darkness surrounds them, unceasingly and inevitably, and that to embrace it is the fate of Mankind.
It is the responsibility of our order to proclaim the power of the Darkness before all men. We shall serve and nurture the Abominable Beasts of our Archon Atrocious, that they may prosper and multiply and spread His Defiling Stain across the Realms Below. Furthermore, whosoever lives and breathes under the Power of the Light, be they man or beast, we shall surely taint and defile, that all may be consumed in the Shadow of our Darkened Lord.
We are not without opposition. Our Church has wrestled over the ages with the Eyes of Argos, who champion the Light in vain, in the name of an impotent justice. And it was not many years ago that those troublemakers who call themselves the Major Explorer Group invaded our Realms Below, appointing themselves without right as judge, jury, and executioner. They waged war against our forces, slaughtered our Horror’s inglorious creatures, sacked our third Grand Archdiocese, and slew our Priests — even our Grand Lunaire! It is our charge to utterly smite them, that they might be crushed under the supremacy of our Mighty Monarch.
Moreover, it is the highest duty and joy of our Church to offer the Blood Sacrifice to our Lord each moon. Indeed, all who refuse His Unholy Decree and His Inglorious Descendancy we shall tear limb from limb. We shall hang them by their very entrails, and drown them by their very blood. We shall pierce them with their very bones and choke them with their very flesh, and we shall feed what remains to the Insatiable Maw of our Divine Devourer, Baphomet the Abominable.
Our Doctrines
The full breadth of our beliefs and practices may be found across the pages of our Unholy Scriptures. Yet for the sake of the initiate, they may be summed up in the following:
I. Worship forever before the Unholy Name of the Corrupt, Baphomet the Abominable, the Divine Devourer. Offer him the Sacrifice of Blood each moon, from among those who reject His Rule, that he may he appeased and grant your desire.
II. Utterly slaughter the servants of the Light, and put to death the traitor who arises among your assembly. Tear them limb from limb, and melt their flesh with fire.
III. Labor slavishly in reverence before the Archon Atrocious, that you may enter into His Inglorious Descendancy.
IV. Abominable are the Monsters of our Monarch, and precious in His sight. You shall never harm nor sacrifice them, apart from His Great Command. Venerate their horrific forms, and see to it that they multiply in number and flourish in their atrocity.
V. Obey in all things the priests set over you, and above all the three Grand Priests Unholy: Sol Invictus, Lunaire Praetoris, and Arcan Nox-Diavoloth. Ordain from among the priesthood a new Grand Priest, should any of the Three perish in battle.
VI. Should the occasion arise, pay tribute in reverence to the Kin of our Master, whose names are:
Eboriath of the Adverse Firmament,
Illithid the Deceiver,
Belhaal-Zebul the Lord of the Flies
Zamzolgul the Sulfurous,
Vehrgaal’sion of the Insipid Waste,
and yet others, whose names are upon the pages of the Arcaneum Malevolens. Do not fail to receive their servants as brethren.
The Three Grand Priests
Before us there shall always be Three: Sol Invictus, Lunaire Praetoris, and Arcan Nox-Diavoloth. Never more shall there be, and never less — Horrific and Corrupt, revered and feared beyond all the Church in the Realms Below.
— Chroniculon Septimus | 11:33
Our organization is governed by Three Grand Priests, of whom each have charge of one Grand Archdiocese. It is we who perform the Blood Sacrifice of each moon, and we who oversee the Church’s every function.
Grand Priest Sol Invictus VIII
Grand Sol in his Warrior's Regalia.
Grand Sol commands the Church’s armed legions, of which there are eleven. Five such legions are made of our men, and Six of our Monarch’s own Descendant Peacekeepers, imbued with arcane power.
From our Church’s very inception, we have been an order of warriors. Over the eons, we have inherited and refined the martial traditions of our precursors. Dominating and mercurial, Grand Sol is the very embodiment of our Dark Lord's Divine Might, leading our Church into battle as a fierce conqueror, eager to utterly crush the Light and its servants.
Moreover, Grand Sol oversees the creation and maintenance of our Descendant Peacekeeper Legions. Guided by the corruption of our Monarch Himself, these inglorious abominations mingle among the wild beasts of the Lower Realms, preying on the flesh of ignorant men.
Grand Priest Lunaire Praetoris VI
None are more learned in the deep and unfathomable secrets of our Lord's Darkness than the Church's Grand Lunaire — of whom I am the sixth. Chosen from among our order's most erudite minds, my prodigious responsibilities encompass the Church's scholastic, administrative, and liturgical affairs.
My administrative duties, quotidian as they appear, are yet fundamental to our order's daily function. As chief spokesman of the Grand Three, it is I who relays our collective decisions and commands to the Church. I manage the continual production and supply of resources necessary for our sustenance and activity, and preside over the construction of new Parishes. Furthermore, I oversee matters such as initiation, Priestly ordination, and vocational appointments, ensuring that our Church operates efficaciously.
However, my foremost obligations concern the literacy of our Church. As head over our body of scholars, my faculties are devoted primarily to the collection, preservation, and careful study of the treasured Arcane texts and historical records within our library. It is my duty to uphold the inerrant interpretation and exercise of our doctrine. I ensure that our Church may never stray from the inglorious path of darkness, that we may be eternally pleasing before the Eyes of our Eldrich Emperor, Baphomet the Abominable.
With regard to the Church's Annual Rites, I am their chief officiant. It is my responsibility to direct the behaviour and response of the congregation for the duration of each Liturgy. Furthermore, it is my responsibility to ascertain that the proceedings are performed in exact accordance with the Commands of our Dark Lord, as written in the Arcane texts.
In the duration of my incumbency as Grand Lunaire, I have devoted a great deal of resources into the production of artifacts. Being far less conspicuous than the Legions, they have proven effective in a more insidious form of conquest into pagan territories. As they are passed unwittingly along the hands of the heathens, they spread our Lord's Corruption in secret within the pagan strongholds.
Grand Priest Arcan Nox-Diavoloth
There have been 8 Grand Sols, and 6 Grand Lunaires. There is only one Grand Arcan.
Grand Arcan is responsible for the conversion and induction of new members into the Church. He also hosts the Rites of Profession that determines an initiate's specialization.
Grand Arcan possesses unrivaled prowess in the arts of Dark Glyph Magic, by which he may summon before us our Dark Lord Himself, Baphomet the Abominable. Little is known to us Rite's Incantation. It is a Great and Unholy Revelation hidden from even the most masterful acolytes, known to none but Grand Arcan himself.
Grand Arcan scarcely speaks to anyone who has not descended to the rank of Grand Priest. Aparts from his loyal acolytes, few besides Grand Sol and myself have ever heard his voice. Fewer still have seen his face, for he almost never removes his cowl.
Do not mistake Grand Arcan's reticence for weakness. He does not hesitate to punish the wayward for their transgressions.
Grand Arcan dwells alone in a Realm of his own design, under the very shadow of our Great Darkness, BAPHOMET THE ABOMINABLE.
The Priesthood
Who priests are: Priests of the Church are leaders of one or more Parishes. A Parish acts as an outpost, ritual site, and place of worship. Parishes are usually used as a place of worship or outpost, however, all Parishes function differently depending on the Parish's leading priest.
What priests do:
- Priests run their designated Parish on a daily basis
The Laity
Each profession has their own responsibilities within the Church. These professions include:
- Scouts | Scouts look through each level for biological material to bring back to the Inspectors.
- Inspectors | Inspectors take the material from the Scouts and inspect whether it is usable or not.
- Sculptors | Scuptors take the material gathered by the Scouts and create abominations to release into the backrooms.
Each initiate is anomalously converted to the Church's religion and belief system.
During the Rites of Profession, each initiate's capabilities are studied, in which it will decide what profession each initiate goes into.
Present Difficulties
It has come to our attention that initiates may face difficulties with the vocabulary common to our Church. In ages past, initiates would receive a rewarding education by means of the Arcane Texts and historical records of the Church.
This is no longer possible in the present day. In the unhappy aftermath of the Great Battle and the sacking of the Third Grand Archdiocese, a great number of our texts were lost or seized by the heathen hands of the Major Explorer Group — may they be Devoured for their deeds. The circumstances, misfortunate as they may be, have yet provided an opportunity to present the contents of this document in a more modern and palatable manner.
In the wake of our loss, our Scholars have assembled here a list of further directions from which Initiates may benefit. Should Initiates continue to find themselves in doubt, they are encouraged to approach their Parish priest for assistance, or to consult any of the Arcane Texts which remain in our library. Initiates are strongly advised not to refer to the documents of the heathens, lest they be deceived into heresy.
List of Realms
The comparative list below has been helpful for Scholars, informants, and initiates alike. It is by no means exhaustive but contains a number of Realms that initiates would be likely to traverse. The list has been produced here twice for ease of reference, in order of both the Church and pagan numeric sequences.
By the Church Numeric sequence:
The church has numbered the Realms by the Roman system inherited from our precursors. A low numeric value generally indicates a Realm with a greater Arcane affinity. To avoid much confusion, particularly with regard to our written texts, Realm numbers are never altered once chosen. Since a multitude of new Realms are continuously discovered each moon, the correlation is far from perfect, merely reflecting a much-approximated general trend of affinity.
