The "Liminal Echo" Theory

After much consideration from the Circle, in accordance with an agreed majority vote from the Council of Veterans, it can now be stated that an explanation regarding the state, origin, and abnormality of the Backrooms has been formed. This theory attempts to posit the cause(s) of the existence of the Backrooms, as well as the reasons for its irregular manner as a whole.

However, it is important to emphasize that the information below is purely speculative. As of today, we haven't found incontrovertible evidence supporting such claims. Nevertheless, this theory, like the "Big Bang Theory" is to the Frontrooms, remains the most plausible explanation for the majority of the scientific community when it comes to the origin of the Backrooms.

Subject: Back OS and the Backrooms' origins

As I am writing these lines, we are in 2020, five years since I fell into the Backrooms; however, Back OS™ is much older than my time here, having been discovered in the mid-60s when computers were first reported in Level 4.

At that time, most people barely knew what a computer was, let alone use one. Knowing that, in 1965, only about 21% of the Backrooms census population no-clipped after the year 1950, meaning 89% of the Backrooms population was therefore unaware of this type of technology, since it was barely talked about back when they lived in the real world. In addition, some old reports from the I.M.B.H. and The Leaders stated that even the most tech-savvy at the time, including a former IBM engineer, were stunned by this technology coming straight from the future.

So, there is a question I've been asking myself ever since I ended up there, a theory that, after what I've learned from "Object 94", is becoming more of a reality than a fantasy.

"How could such technology get here so early?"

Fortunately, with my current knowledge, I can finally answer it.

Back OS™ isn't the only case impacted by this phenomenon.

Indeed, other objects or levels all share a similar case, such as Level 78 being discovered in 1943, when going into space was only science fiction, or levels such as Level 0.1, which features a space megastructure equipped with technology that our world hasn't achieved yet. Level 808 is another perfect example showing that the Backrooms can create, once again, fictional and whimsical ideas that come directly from us, using an aesthetics that didn't exist back then. Therefore, as far as Back OS™ is concerned, I believe it was designed around the general population's idea of computers and information technology at the time, and "The Backrooms" probably anticipated that.

What I'm trying to say is that… this place possesses a consciousness, maybe even an intelligence, and it's becoming more and more obvious the longer you stay here. This place can not only control space but also time. This liminal effect; the feeling we have already been here before… Now it all makes sense!! The Backrooms are feeding on us, on each of our minds, our feelings, our trends, our preferences, our nostalgia, our dreams - everything. Have you noticed how it is able to comprehend us as far as the human's popular trends such as Internet memes and popular music across the generations? And that's only one example among many! The Backrooms were born because of us, and now we are trapped inside our own creation; unable to escape our own selves.

This world decides what should be frozen in time and how it should evolve, only based on ourselves and the collective consciousness.

No one could possibly make such an OS with the total lack of knowledge about Information Technologies and Networking at the time. For me, only one answer remain. This place created Back OS™, as well as the computers you can now find in modern levels, from the idea that we humans had of computer technology at the time. Therefore, It would suggest that the Backrooms control Back OS™, or that Back OS™ is a sentient entity with a certain degree of intelligence… But those two conclusions converge toward the same result, if you think more deeply.

In my humble opinion, the “Liminal Echo” theory is the most plausible as far as the origins of Backrooms are concerned, just like the "Big Bang" theory is for Frontrooms. Of course, it's still just a theory, and there are many more that try to explain the origins of the Backrooms. At the end of the day, you're free to believe whatever you want…
